In the past few decades, the activities of botanic gardens have been considerably diversified while still creating enlarged collections.

In 2006 our Garden was the first in Hungary where environmental education was conducted. Our Botanical Garden welcomes all city dwellers and families as well. We organize programmes on special days, such as Earth Day, when we aim to present the diversity and value of plants. Lotus Days have been organized since 2008, and quickly became a great educational and cultural festival attracting thousands of people.

Activities

Currently our most important activities are the following:

Collection management:

the most important task of the botanical garden is to maintain and improve its plant collections (like the rose garden, the rock garden, and the taxonomical collection). This involves keeping accurate records of the species and varieties, protection, care and maintenance of collections as well as establishing new collections. The well-managed collections form the basis of the associated activities of the garden.

Demonstration and conservation of biological diversity:

the Garden contributes to the genome conservation of numerous protected plants. More than 40 protected species are on display for the visitors. These plants belong to the national heritage of Hungary, and there are species whose habitats are found only in Hungary. The exotic plants of the Garden are displayed mainly to show their economic importance (food, industrial and ornamental plants).

Education & research:

The Botanic Garden is part of the university, therefore it serves academic education and research. Its other important function is to promote an environmentally conscious way of thinking through public education and popular science sessions. Accordingly, education, extra-academic courses for students, weekend family programmes, and temporal exhibitions are all important activities in the Garden.

choose one of the above programmes or take a walk and enjoy the fresh air of the Garden. We strive to provide an esthetical environment with beautiful plants and flowers to impress our visitors. Dioramas present the birds of the garden, and patient visitors might be able to catch sight of these birds in the wild. Bird songs add an extra experience, especially in spring. With our bird-nest and bird-shelter demonstrations, we would like to encourage visitors to create bird-friendly gardens around their homes.
