Root Canal Treatment

• aim: The removal of dental pulp, the expansion of the root canal and the creation of a filling which is not permeable to bacteria.
• what to do prior treatment: A precise oral examination and an x-ray of the tooth and surrounding area are necessary. During the next consultation the patient gets a detailed information on the planned treatments, type of anesthesia and if needed the materials used, furthermore on the incidental complications and what is to be done after treatment. It is advised to eat before every dental treatment, because it is recommended not to eat after treatment until the numbness lasts, which is usually for 3-4 hours after the injection.
• steps: Oral examination and x-ray diagnostics. Local anesthetic for a painless treatment. Removal of the old filling and/or removal of the decayed parts. Exploration and cleansing of root canals. Determination of the length of the root canal with a special equipment. Disinfection of the root canal with rinsing solution. Placing medication into the root canal. Temporary filling. During next treatment cleansing the root canals again. Creating root canal filling. Depending on the size of the hole in the tooth a filling or a dental inlay/crown created by a dental technician covers it.
• advantage: Stopping the pain and keeping the tooth.
• what to do after treatment: It is advised not to eat until it’s numb. You must be careful when biting and chewing as they are sensitive.
