Dental (aesthetic) Inlays

  • Inlay: It’s a transition between a dental filling and a prosthesis as the dental technician creates the inlay based on the impression taken by the dentist. It can be made of ceramics, composite strengthened by glass-ionomer, titan and gold.
    • composite: aesthetic, hard, resistant but it shrinks
    • aim: Restitution of aesthetics and function, restoration of the height of the bite.
    • steps: This filling type is more precise, but as it is made by a lab technician, the process requires two steps. Just like in case of the filling created at the dental clinic we remove the decayed parts of the tooth in local anesthesia, then impressing comes the next. As a following step a temporary filling is installed into the tooth. During the next appointment the temporary filling is removed and the inlay is cemented into the tooth.
    • advantage: The restoration of a missing tooth can be fixed with it as well (Inlay anchored bridge). In this case the dentist won’t polish the teeth surrounding the missing tooth. Compared to aesthetic filling the edge closure is more precise.
    • types:
      • golden inlay: the best filling – created by a dental lab technician. One of the beneficial qualities of gold is that it can be smoothed onto the tooth, that way it is the filling that has the longest lifespan. It doesn’t discolour.
      • golden-ceramics inlay: Its advantage is that it’s aesthetic as the visible parts (occlusal surface) are made of porcelain and only the sides are golden, they do not discolour.
      • plastic inlay: Compared to a filling it’s edge is more precise, it doesn’t shrink. This is a solution to building up a tooth that couldn’t be build up with an aesthetic filling.
    • what to do after treatment: Maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.
  • Onlay: A construction covering the approximal surface and all the cusps. (restoration).
